On Motherhood

A Shout-out to Mothers

It’s Mother’s Day, so here’s a shout-out to all mothers who’ve made enormous sacrifices for their families.

Keep up the excellent work.  I’m so proud of you.

As much as you continue to go at it as a mother, this Mother’s Day, sit back, relax, and let your family take care of you.  As my mother used to say in later years, “I’ve done everything; now it’s your turn.”

On Motherhood

Motherhood is a position of much stature.

Mothers are doctors, nurses, teachers, preachers, psychologists, and more.  Mothers work tirelessly to nurture and support their young ones.  Whether staying at home or working outside, mothers make a huge difference in the lives of children.

A mother’s love, care, and attention are necessary even while a child is grown.  Like teachers, a mother gets to shape a child’s future.

Mothers stress and fuss over their babies. But on the other hand, some mothers had no support and managed to raise their children and keep their families going.  Single mothers, in particular, have raised some very successful children: chief doctors, attorneys, business people, and more.

Mothers, by nature, are nurturers, but that doesn’t mean they don’t get tired or overwhelmed.  A stay-at-home mother works nonstop.  As a former military wife, life as a mother was not easy.

Mothers Need Support

Mothers of all kinds (working and not, single and married, military, those who miscarried, etc.) need all the support they can get.

“It takes all of us - every day of the year- to support mothers, and ensure our world’s future- our children- can achieve their highest potential.” (www.globalvolunteers.org)

Without mothers, our world will suffer. Therefore, a mother’s love and compassion is essential.

I’ve compiled a list of resources for mothers.  Here are a few.

Resources:

1.  Nurse-Family Partnership- An abundance of information for first-time parents (www.nursefamilypartnership.org)

2.  The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline- 1-833-9-HELP4MOMS (1-833-943-5746) A good source for managing feelings

3.  www.parents.com- Offers virtual resources

4.   Healthy Moms. Strong Babies.  An educational and supportive resource for families caring for a newborn and women getting ready for childbirth. (www.marchofdimes.org)

In Honor of my Mother

My mother was a strong, vigorous woman.

While a taskmaster, she offered blessings, much advice, guidance, affection, and love.

Whenever I came home to visit, she was happy to see me and cooked all kinds of food.

My mother and I talked, laughed, listened to music, and enjoyed each other in her last days.

I couldn’t have asked for a better mother (I have a smile on my face sharing this with you).

Here’s one last thing,

As difficult as it may be at times, motherhood is rewarding.  Remember to surround yourself with loving, compassionate, and positive people.

To all you mothers out there,

Happy Mother’s Day!

Thanks for reading.
