My Publishing Journey
The Overwhelm
The publishing business can be overwhelming and terrifying at times. Sometimes I feel like crying, but then I have no tears. I ask God for help and let it be, which reminds me of the song “Let It Be” by the Beatles.
I finally broke down while listening to the lyrics.
“Let it be” repeats itself, and “There will be an answer” stands out. “Mother Mary speaks words of wisdom,” Paul McCartney sings. McCartney wrote it, yet he claims it’s not a religious song and leaves the interpretation to us.
I know what I think.
In addition, writing and publishing are two distinct things. I prefer the writing and creative part, but that’s alright. Sometimes, I want to control the publishing process; other times, I just let it be.
Here’s what works.
I try to be gentle. I take it one step at a time and continue to write other things while fighting distractions. And I’m often reminded to stay focused. Going out with a friend for lunch or vacation is tempting, but I don’t. I’ve learned to say no. I’m in the middle of so much and need to step out into the sunlight, but what excites me? The book launch party.
Staying Positive
As challenging as the publishing process may be, I’m trying to stay positive.
It’s essential to surround myself with positive people, not someone who will bring me down. But I’m reminded that everyone has a function in this world. One person has said, “I haven’t seen your work yet,” or another has commented, “You’re a dreamer.”
I take these comments with stride because the individuals don’t know about writing and the process of publishing.
Yet it was uplifting when another said, “You are an example of how it’s never too late to start something.” But I must admit, “You’re a dreamer” stings a little. However, it's encouraging when I think of the Olympians who made it. They, too, once dreamed.
Dreaming is good, I say.
