A Father's Day Perspective

Jun 09, 2024 by Elvira Burgo

I’ve often heard Father’s Day is not widely celebrated as Mother’s Day. It’s as if a father’s role is undervalued.

Here’s My Take.

It may appear that way, but ask a father’s child, and the answer is clear: A father’s role is important in a child's life, and that’s what matters.

A couple of months ago, I came across a cute t-shirt of my eldest son with his father when he was a baby.

In my own family, Father’s Day was (and still is) special. Our children made t-shirts and hats with their handprints for their fathers. I put on the music “Dancing With My Father” by Luther Vandross and did much to make Dad feel loved.

A father is critical.

But I’ve had instances that were not so good.

“You don’t know how hard it is to not have a father in your life,” a boy once cried. Another lost a close bond with his father when he found a different partner. “It’s a void you don’t understand,” said a girl.

Hearing those words broke my heart, and it still does while I write this article.

That’s the impact of a father’s role.

So, this Father’s Day, let’s celebrate fathers. However, let us also remember those children and adults whose fathers are absent. We can’t make things right between a father and a child, and we aren't usually the ones who handle this, but we can do the following.

We can greet someone, smile, and show some joy.

Happy Father’s Day to all dads,

Elvira
