Not Feeling the Joy of the Holidays?

Here are some tips I find helpful

“Excited about the holidays?”

I got this question recently.

For many, the holidays are a joyous time.  But for some, not so much.

Someone may have lost a loved one or suffered a tragedy.  Others may feel lonely and miss pre-pandemic days of entertaining.

Whatever the case, according to Dr. Rakesh Jain, “Holiday blues are a pretty common problem even though, as a society, we see the holidays as a joyous time.” (Source: www.webmd.com)

For me, the holidays have always been difficult.  I want everything to go right, and when they do not, I am not satisfied.  There is also the pressure to purchase the “perfect” gift and to entertain.

For years, I didn’t know why I felt this way.  Having identified the problem, my high expectation is the culprit; I am now better equipped to change how I look at the holiday season.

What I have found helps is focusing on the good things and being mindful of the little moments of happiness.  Happiness is everywhere if we are attuned.

Knowing we are loved also is enough.

Speaking of love,

I love how the World Cup brings everyone together.  A crowd roars.  A player looks pensive.  I am happy for the winning team, but that poster boy sobbing hurt.

After a soccer player scores, the announcer comments, “You can see how loved he is by his teammates.”  Although my morning routine has changed, my son’s love for soccer makes me want to watch the game.  It gives me something else to do besides the same old stuff.

“It’s by far the most interesting World Cup,” my youngest shares.

Thanks, son, for your enthusiasm.

And to other soccer enthusiasts, enjoy.

If the holidays are not what you want them to be, or you are not feeling the joy,

I UNDERSTAND.

Whatever you are feeling cannot be ignored or negated.

The following tips for making the holiday season more joyous have helped me tremendously, and I hope they do the same for you.  However, please consult a professional if the blues are overwhelming or do not go away.

Tips for Making it a More Joyous Holiday Season

Half Salamander Exercise:

Dr. Tara Swart Bieber shared this.  It’s supposed to stop stress and anxiety.

a.  Sit or stand in a comfortable position, with your head facing forward

b.  Shift your eyes to the right without turning your head

c.  Tilt your head towards your right shoulder and hold for 30 to 60 seconds
